Are you fit for business?

We all live busy lifestyles these days. However many people in high stress jobs do not have a good work/life balance which impacts negatively on their own personal health and well being. Furthermore it has a detrimental effect on their ability to achieve in the working environment. This can impact heavily on your business and thus your profits.

They ignore the early symptoms of stress which then leads to more serious disorders such as burnout, adrenal fatigue, insomnia, depression, chronic fatigue and digestive disorders. Long term effects at work include decreased productivity, absenteeism, poor work relations with colleagues and mood swings,

So how do you recognise if your workforce is stressed?

  • High absenteeism and sickness levels
  • Poor morale amongst staff
  • Customer complaints
  • Long hours/work culture
  • Employees not taking their full holiday entitlement
  • Unhappy work environment
  • Low productivity and efficiency
  • Negative impact on bottom line profiles
  • High Staff turnover

Awareness/Recognition is the key. Here is how to spot the signs by being vigilante for the following symptoms.

  • Insomnia
  • Weight loss/weight gain
  • Digestive disorders
  • Lack of energy and motivation
  • Lack of concentration
  • Aching muscles
  • Headaches/migraines
  • Frequent colds

So now that you know how to spot the signs how do you de-stress and motivate your staff?

Nutrition is absolutely crucial. Many people over look how important a healthy and balanced meal plan is.

  • Balance Blood sugar levels by eating low glycemic index foods
  • Combination of slow release carbohydrates, good quality protein and essential fats
  • Regular meals
  • Limit intake of stimulants such as tea/coffee which drive adrenaline levels further and highly processed food which is often low in nutritional content

Exercise is not only great for keeping in shape but it is also essential to maintain happiness through releasing endorphins.

  • Helps to burn up excess adrenaline and helps to normalise hormones left behind by stress
  • Allow concentration on something other than work worries
  • Yoga in particular has been shown to improve the balance of stress hormones in particularly to normalise cortisol levels
  • For exercise to be beneficial it should be enjoyable
